Watch our Garden Grow!

The excitement is "growing" and so is our long-awaited garden! Thanks to our garden committee, led by Dan Gibbs, we can look forward to having our own fresh fruits, vegetables, and flowers to harvest very soon!

The final garden layout has grown to 100′ x 150′ and we'll use every inch of that. We currently have over 500 plants already started from seeds...with more to come. These plants are currently in plats thanks to greenhouse space on loan from UGA and a generous donation of soil.

As we raise the funds the garden work is being completed. As you have probably noticed, the grading has been completed as well as the concrete platform where the greenhouse and storage shed will sit. The walkways leading to and through the garden have been marked waiting for the concrete to be poured.

We have tentative commitments for the needed electrical work which will be scheduled when the walkways are finished.

Several volunteers, including Girl Scout groups, a Daisy group, and numerous Center members, have offered to plant and maintain the garden after the infrastructure is in. The garden coordinators will be attending a continuing education training day Friday, April 15 to learn all the ins and outs of successful gardening.

Additional Garden Funding Needed

Fencing for the garden has been selected and preliminary quotes show we need to raise another $3,000 to complete the installation. A total of $20,000 is still needed to reach our fund-raising goals in order to complete the third phase of the project which will allow us to have a complete harvest this fall and year round plants.

Since the beginning of March, our spare change bowl in the Café has being applied towards the garden and so far has collected over $100. We welcome any additional financial contributions to our garden which can be made by cash, check, or credit card by stopping by our reception desk. Online donations by credit card can also be made here.
